20th Feb 2014

This is an example of one of the photoshoots I did which I am not going to include within my magazine. It represents a sexual side towards the disintegration of a relationship. It's aim was to show the way in which some people may act after a break up, sleeping around, becoming more sexual with many partners but being emotionally disconnected.

The lighting is very dark with links to the makeup, hair and nails.
Here I used a black crackle nail varnish, a black blend of lipstick on the mouth to represent the darkness which comes after the act of this sexual behaviour and how damaging it really can be.
The location was a dark car park also representing the no-so glamorous reality of sleeping around and trying to forget your broken relationships and heart...

Though I do like the harsh look of these images as they are very real, I am wanting to create stronger images with better lighting and a photographer as I took these images as a test for myself.

Catharsis

The next photoshoot I did took place in the bathroom of my flat on the 8th of Feb.
The model was Elise Parkes and the photographer was Megan Jordan. This photoshoot is the most important one within the whole publication due to the connection I have with the concept. I have chosen to change the theme of my magazine to the 'Heartbreak Issue' as it has a personal connection with my break up last year. As well as this, many people can associate and relate to the emotions and the chapters which I will include making it interesting to read.
The concept of this photoshoot is based on the moment I realised I wanted to break up with my partner last year whilst we lived together. I was in the bathroom, the only chance I had to be alone (we lived together) and it was like I woke up from a dream and I wasn't happy anymore.
The story I have written up to go with this photoshoot explains in more depth what happened and this also explains the meaning for the location, makeup and hair.

Mood Board:

The makeup - I wanted the face to be glossy and the eyes to be quite rough around the edges. I added a gloss over the eye makeup as well to add emotion and feeling as well as a linking texture to the water. I wanted her lips to look full and nude with a slight shine and her eyes to be smokey, mysterious but expressive at the same time. Quite contoured but not too much.

The hair - the hair is one of the main focal points within the images. Underwater it is to look free and spread out as the water in the concept represents freedom. What it would be like to be in a place away from reality. When she is out of the water I wanted the hair to be covering the face and body messily, which is a representation of the feeling of being trapped underneath her current existence and in her relationship.

Also, due to the main focus (a part from the theme/emotion) being the hair and makeup, I have decided to include a product list and a face chart at the end of each series to show what I used and how I created the look. This idea stemmed from the originally wanting to include product shots, however I went into the MAC store in John Lewis a couple of days before the shoot and saw they had for their new collection, variations of face chart for different looks and a product lists showing which of their new products you use to create each look.

Here is the final face chart:

Here are a few examples of the shoot which I have edited...

All round I am extremely happy with the way which this shoot has turned out. I think the water is extremely effective, along with the hair, makeup lighting and editing. Although if I could change anything it would be the variation in lengths of the shot, but due to the size of my bathroom this was very hard to create. I would have also used fake nails - making them look natural but to be longer and more feminine e.g. a matt black square shape or a simple french manicure style.

TO DO:
  • Post up for some examples of peoples heart break stories for inspiration for next shoot
  • Use social media to build up a following for the magazine so people are aware of when it will be published
  • Create moodboards and face charts for more looks and model scout again
  • Start creating an inDesign file to keep all edited and final images ready to be set up for print

W/B 7th Feb 14

I have been designing and planning test shoots that I may include within my final print of the magazine.
Last Friday I did a test shoot using raw meat as a heart combined with fake blood, a female body and high heels.
Here are some of the drawings I created prior to the shoot. They show the artistic yet harsh reality of heartbreak with influences from art, fashion and music. They show the physical pain you get in your chest - like someone has ripped your heart out and stepped on it.

I set up the studio myself which is why the lighting is not as clinical as I would have hoped. These four images have been edited and cropped. Though they look effective, I won't be using them in my final print because they will not flow with the other looks I want to shoot.

If I was to shoot again I would use stronger, more powerful looking stiletto heels, a real heart (pig heart from the butchers) and cleaner, more clinical lighting.
Doing this shoot, although I will not use it in my final, has shown me the direction which I am wanting to take with each chapter and look within my magazine.

  • Design more shoots - face charts, mood boards, model scouting and find a photographer
  • Choose next chapter and what it means, why I have chosen to do it
  • Pick the perfect location to reflect the mood and emotion

W/B 3rd Feb 14

This week I have a meeting with Dejan to discuss my final ideas and to see the progress which I have made. I had a photo shoot on Friday the 30th with two models Izzi Bailey and Izzi Nash. The original idea was to explore split personality disorders, using Izzi Nash as the main model and to change her look 3-4 times whilst having Izzi Bailey’s look stay the same in each shot. Bailey is a visual representation of the damaging and dangerous side of the condition. Makeup and wigs worked very well, the lighting was perfect and one which I will use is most of my images to create a sense of continuity throughout the magazine. The models were good so I know to use them again, the time scale for the shoot was from 5pm until 9pm which is too long so I may enquire about a first year to assist.  I edited the pictures myself which look professional.

Example one

Example two

The meeting with Dejan highlighted that the content of the magazine should have a more solid construction. We decided to change the running theme throughout the magazine on the changing emotions and feelings which occur when going through heartbreak.
Last year I split with with my long term boyfriend of nearly three years therefore I have first hand experience and can project this through my images and into each concept/emotion. As well as the memories I still have diary entries and conversations which I can look over as primary and personal research.
This particular photoshoot can also be related to heartbreak because of the mental health link when you experience a breakup. The depression and the dark side after you experience severe emotional pain.
The shoot which I will be doing this week will be using a raw steak which will be held to look like a human heart. With this idea being refresh out of my mind and also having first-hand experience of heartbreak throughout my second year of university, I can project my own personal experience into my work making personal and others will be able to relate to each series shot within the final print.

·         Choose 5 final images from the previous test shoot for final project

·         Create another shoot and take in images for next week’s meeting

·         Play around with makeup and hair to explore how to show each emotion with colours and application

·         Drawings and face charts and brain storm ideas
